size=3>Varios descendieron de la camioneta. Altos y bajos, gordos y delgados.
Sus rostros furibundos de mirada exploradora trataban de ver en cualquiera a un
sospechoso. Y caminaban como queriendo atemorizar a los despreocupados
transeúntes... Su prepotencia reflejada en la mirada y apoyada en una pistola
resguardada en la cintura, se abría paso entre la gente que evitaba temerosa
cualquier contacto con aquellos hombres de la ley.<BR>Entre tal aspaviento
conducían a un individuo de triste aspecto: Moreno, mirada oscura, sonrisa
muerta; arqueadas las cejas y gruesos los labios; rostro y corazón temerosos...
sin explicarse porqué...<BR><BR>No había cometido el enorme robo del que lo
hacían responsable, aunque el total de las conjeturas, de las sospechas, recaían
en él. Sin embargo...<BR><BR>Había sido el último en salir de la oficina, lo
reconocía; dos horas más de lo normal, pero él había permanecido aquel tiempo
tan solo para terminar un trabajo que urgía. Muchos de sus amigos y compañeros
así lo afirmaron. Nadie podía creer que él fuera un ladrón a pesar de las
pruebas que existían en su contra No obstante...<BR><BR>Los agentes lo habían
aprehendido y lo llevaban a los separos de la procudaduría. Su deber era cumplir
con la justicia y trabajar por ella. Ni ruegos ni súplicas de la esposa y de los
padres del reo les importaron. ¡Tal era la rectitud de tan nobles y necesarios
servidores públicos en una sociedad de fecundo comercio!<BR><BR>A los compañeros
de oficina del acusado les parecía increíble que un hombre como él, hubiera
robado, y sobre todo, cuando era uno de los empleados de mayor confianza en la
institución, con tantos años de trabajo allí<BR><BR>Ahora, aquel prestigio se
derrumbaba. La honra ganada con tanta dedicación y esfuerzo se venía abajo. El
señor gerente estaba indignadísimo. Había que darle un escarmiento al ladrón. La
justicia debía obrar con mano poderosa<BR><BR>El grupo de hombres atravesó por
largos y oscurecidos corredores. Llegaron hasta un portón de fierro y uno de
ellos, el más gordo y de más baja estatura, abrió. Hicieron que el preso se
adelantara. De un fuerte empujón lo metieron.<BR><BR>El delincuente mostraba aún
cierto aire de serena altivez.<BR>—Con que muy valiente... ¿No? —dijo uno
encarándosele.<BR>—¡Aquí vas a desembuchar la verdad o te rompemos la madre!—
Rabió el otro que aparentaba ser muy malo. Los ojos del detenido resplandecieron
de ira al escuchar aquella ofensa. Dos lo sujetaron de ambos brazos y el más
fornido de todos descargó un puñetazo en el estómago del preso.<BR><BR>—¡Vas a
confesar, sí o no! ¿Quiénes fueron tus cómplices? ¿Dónde está el dinero? ¡Habla!
¡O quieres que te demos más fregadazos! — el prisionero se retorcía de dolor. El
fornido siguió dándole golpes. Uno... dos... tres... muchos más... y a cada
pregunta el reo contestaba negativamente. Los hombresbestias lo martirizaban
como si trataran de obligarlo a reconocer la falta no cometida, como en tiempos
de la Inquisición.<BR><BR>El acusado no pudo resistir por más tiempo aquella
lluvia de golpes y perdió el sentido. Se desplomó y quedó tendido en el mugroso
piso. El fornido todavía le dio un puntapié...<BR>Varios días de constantes
sufrimientos pasaron; varios que fueron como siglos, como
eternidades....<BR><BR>El reo estaba decidido a reconocer los cargos que se le
atribuían. Eran preferibles algunos meses de cárcel que un día más de tortura:
Nada más de recordar el tanque de agua sucia, el excusado lleno de excremento y
orines, los toques eléctricos en los testículos, se estremecía.<BR><BR>El
recluso se había transformado en un guiñapo. La barba crecida, amarillos los
ojos, temblorosos y entre abiertos los labios; adolorido, amoratado, casi
muerto...<BR><BR>En el rincón de la celda maloliente y oscura se hallaba cuando
el portón se abrió y dos hombres entraron sonriendo:<BR><BR>—¡Te salvaste
cabrón! ¡Ya cayeron los verdaderos ladrones! —El reo enarcó lo más que pudo las
cejas...<BR><BR>—¡Qué! —exclamó sin poder decir otras palabras...<BR><BR>—¡Vas a
quedar libre...! —y conducido por los celadores el acusado salió, fue llevado
hasta unas oficinas y allí, después de los trámites reglamentarios lo declararon
libre de cargos.<BR><BR>Un individuo despótico le dijo algo que él, tan
emocionado, no alcanzó a comprender... que le código... que la ley... que la
sociedad...<BR><BR>Al final sólo entendió que le decían:<BR><BR>—Dispense
usted...<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
