ya no espera nada, comprendí que tenía la ilusión de que Martina o Claudio nos
hubieran mandado un giro desde Kansas.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

cambio yo lo que temía era otro aviso del departamento legal amenazándonos por
el retraso en el pago de la tarjeta. Iba a esconderlo en mi bolsa hasta que mi
marido se calmara. Gracias a Dios el cartero pasó de largo. Me alegré tanto que
me dieron ganas de besarle los pies. Si la dichosa notificación hubiera llegado
en esos momentos, quién sabe qué habría sucedido.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

la ventana. Mi esposo, al ver que no habíamos recibido nada, se estuvo un rato
callado y luego me hizo una pregunta rarísima: ¿puedes creer que las momias de
Guanajuato hayan sido capaces de enviar a México 150 mil dólares de divisas y
tus hijos no puedan mandarnos ni siquiera 200 miserables dólares? Pensar que a
lo mejor uno de aquellos despojos pertenecía a mi familia. De ser así, me tocaba
al menos una partecita de lo ganado por los cadáveres. La idea me hizo
reír.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

parece muy chistoso que Martina o Claudio, por quienes ahora cargamos con un
montón de deudas, no se acuerden de que tienen obligaciones con nosotros? Le
contesté lo primero que se me ocurrió: me dio gusto el detalle de las momias. Si
mi tío Ladino supiera lo de los 150 mil dólares se pondría muy orgulloso. Él las
cuidó durante muchos años y creo que las procuró más que a todos sus sobrinos
juntos.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

hubiera gustado seguir hablando de mi tío, pero José me dijo que no eran
momentos para hacer recuerdos de familia. Lo importante era pensar cómo íbamos a
darle a su primo Ernesto tan siquiera un abono de los 30 mil pesos que nos ha
prestado. Ese dinero no lo usamos para nuestros gastos, sino para mandárselo a
los hijos.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

resignamos a que se fueran a Estados Unidos por la ilusión de que encontraran un
buen trabajo. Al principio no les fue mal y de vez en cuando nos mandaban 400,
500 dólares. Luego sucedió lo que menos esperábamos: a los gringos también les
pegó la crisis, los paisanos perdieron sus empleos y ahora quienes esperábamos
su ayuda tenemos que mandarles dinero para que se sostengan. ¡Qué buen
negocio!<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

a escuchar el silbato del cartero enfrentito de nuestra puerta. José respingó:
lo único que falta es que nos traiga el cobro de la tarjeta. Le aseguré que no
era eso. ¿Cómo lo sabes? Ni modo de decirle que ya nos había llegado, así que no
dije nada y muy tranquila abrí la puerta.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

publicación nueva que estaban regalando en la colonia. José me gritó que la
devolviera porque detrás de la palabra gratis siempre hay bicho encerrado. El
cartero me miró muy confundido y rápido justifiqué la reacción de mi esposo:
disculpe. Lo que sucede es que el otro día vinieron a ofrecerme una crema
relajante. La tomé pensando que era un obsequio. En la tarde se presentó la
demostradora para cobrarme los 600 pesos que costaba el producto. Gracias a Dios
yo no había abierto el tarro, porque si no... El cartero se fue muy
molesto.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

me pidió el folleto para hojearlo. Me puse a tender la ropa antes de que

resto de mi vida ocultando las cuentas del banco. Llegará el día en que algún

mis hijos se fueron, los cuartitos de mi casa me parecían enormes. Pensé en que
será todavía peor cuando se lleven mis cosas. Estarán viejas y destartaladas,
pero las quiero, porque José y yo las compramos a base de muchos sacrificios. La
idea de la pérdida me hizo llorar. Después pensé que no debía ser tan tonta. Las
cosas materiales van y vienen, y al final –como decía mi tío Ladino– uno estira
la pata y no se lleva nada, ni un quinto.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

style="FONT-SIZE: 13pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES">Recordé
los 150 mil dólares que se habían ganado exhibiendo las momias en Estados Unidos
y volví a pensar en que quizá una de esas maravillas fuera mi antepasado. La
primera persona que tuvo esa ocurrencia fue mi tío Ladino.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

domingos mis papás me llevaban a visitarlo a la cripta. No sé quién me producía
más temor: si él, todo pelón, con la cara chupada y los bigotes blancos, o las
momias. Les perdí el miedo cuando mi tío me aconsejó que las viera con respeto,
porque quizá nuestra familia llevara sangre de alguna de aquellas momias. Me
tranquilicé y hasta me sentí orgullosa cuando lo oí explicarles a unos turistas
que la conservación de los cadáveres era única en el mundo y cuando se supiera
de ellas en otras partes le darán mucho prestigio a
Guanajuato.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

tío tuvo razón, pero no se imaginó que las momias iban a lograr lo que muchos
paisanos que se fueron a Estados Unidos ya no pueden hacer: mandarnos dólares.
En eso estaba cuando vi que José metía el folleto en el bóiler. ¿No está bueno?
¡Es una babosada! Con razón lo regalan. Imagínate, son cuatro hojas en donde se
anuncian cosas que de plano ya no sirven: una silla con dos patas, una lavadora
con el motor fundido, un saco al que le falta una manga, una muñeca sin peluca.
Ofrecían en 15 pesos la mitad de una dentadura postiza? No entiendo. Sí, nada
más la placa de abajo. Dime, ¿a quien puede servirle eso? A la gente más pobre,
le dije.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

días estuve pensando en eso hasta que al fin se me ocurrió abrir mi negocito. Me
costó bastante trabajo y tuve que dar muchos rodeos para convencer a José de que
no quedaba más remedio que venderlo todo. La primera vez que le hablé de mis
planes se burló de mí, preguntó qué sabía yo de ventas si había pasado toda mi
vida detrás de una máquina planchando overoles.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN lang=ES
style="FONT-SIZE: 13pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES">La
segunda ocasión en que le traté el asunto me salió con su dichoso orgullo. Al
ver que lo rematábamos todo, nuestros vecinos lo juzgarían como un hombre
incapaz de conseguir un trabajo aunque fuera de cargador en una fábrica o en un
mercado.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN lang=ES
style="FONT-SIZE: 13pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES">Encontré
la solución para evitar habladurías: aquí las noticias vuelan. Como no queriendo
la cosa, le invento a alguna vecina que no puedes cargar nada porque estás
herniado y el médico te prohibió hacer esfuerzos.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN lang=ES
style="FONT-SIZE: 13pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES">José
tiene muchas virtudes, pero es terco como una mula. Quiso desanimarme diciéndome
que no estaba dispuesto a pasar vergüenzas cuando alguien de la familia llegara
a visitarnos y se diera cuenta de que estamos en la chilla y por eso tenemos que
vender nuestros muebles. Le aseguré que eso no iba a suceder. Desde que estamos
en el hoyo nadie nos visita, ni siquiera sus padres –y eso que lo adoran–, por
temor a que sigamos pidiéndoles dinero prestado.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN lang=ES
style="FONT-SIZE: 13pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES">Se
dio cuenta de que estaba diciéndole la verdad, pero como no le gusta darme la
razón me salió con la ocurrencia de que un Martínez –¡ay sí, tú, qué elegantes!–
jamás vende y siempre compra. Con eso me colmó el plato. Le recordé que dos de
sus sobrinas venden aceite para coches a las puertas de una agencia en Zaragoza.
¿Y eso qué tiene de malo?, me gritó. ¡Nada, cálmate! A mí me parece muy bien que
las nenas ayuden a sus padres, pero siento que las pobres chamacas tengan que
trabajar en bikini... Sólo de imaginarme lo que les gritan los camioneros me
alegro de que Martina ande por Estados Unidos.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN lang=ES

puso pinta. Según él no tengo derecho a criticar a su familia y menos para salir
con mis caprichos. Entonces respiré hondo, le pedí a Santa Rita que me iluminara
y me decidí a enseñarle todos los cobros de la tarjeta. Mi marido se enfureció,
dijo que si algo no toleraba era que le ocultara las cosas. Lo hice porque cada
vez que aparece otro problema te pones como loco. Mírate cómo estás,
¡mírate!<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

revisó los documentos. El último era aterrador. Los hizo pedazos y los tiró al
suelo: “esos pendejos se equivocan si creen que me asustan. Por mí, ¡que se lo
lleven todo! Vi que era mi oportunidad: si tú mismo reconoces que tarde o
temprano perderemos nuestras cosas, ¿por qué mejor no las vendemos antes de que
nos las quiten?<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
<P style="MARGIN-RIGHT: -6pt"><SPAN lang=ES

escuché su risa temí que José estuviera volviéndose loco. No te preocupes, estoy
muy bien. La demente eres tú. ¿Quién va a querer comprarte la cantidad de
porquerías que tenemos? Lo que no está descompuesto está roto. Le mencioné el
folleto de los desechos y me mandó al diablo. Por más que quise aguantarme se me
salieron las lágrimas y eso lo suavizó: no llores, pero comprende que no puedo
verte hacer el ridículo ofreciendo cosas que para nosotros significan mucho,
pero que ya no tienen ningún valor. Le juré que me sentía capaz de venderlas y
me dio una palmadita en el hombro: puede que sea cierto, pero dime, ¿cuánto vas
a sacar con la venta de muebles feos, ropa desgastada, trastos despostillados?
No sé cómo se me ocurrió decirle: no ganaré tanto como los que exhiben a las
momias de Guanajuato, pero algo será. La risa de mi esposo fue la prueba de que
lo había convencido al fin.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

que siempre supo que para salir del atolladero no quedaba otro remedio que
deshacernos de nuestras cosas. Si se negó fue porque los hombres, aunque no les
guste reconocerlo, también se encariñan con los objetos y los muebles que hay en
una casa. Aunque estén desgastados y viejos, cuentan mucho de la historia
familiar.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
