Elvira Manso era larga y, como tantas de la ciudad, sin nomenclatura. Para
verificar que uno había llegado a Florines era necesario preguntárselo a algún
vecino.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES" lang=ES><FONT
size=3>En Florines todas las edificaciones eran desiguales. Construidas sobre
terrenos sinuosos, a la distancia parecían barcas ancladas en aguas serenas.
Acentuaba este efecto movedizo el desorden de la numeración: del ocho se saltaba
al 90 y luego al l5, después al 40 y más allá no recuerdo a
cuál.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES" lang=ES><FONT
size=3>En un extremo de la acera norte se encontraba una casa con tejado verde y
mansarda. Su estilo francés la hacía sobresalir con respecto de las otras
anónimas, elementales, cuadradas, casi todas con sólo dos ventanas y una puerta.
Esas aberturas podían equivaler a los ojos y la nariz de un rostro chato
dibujado por un niño.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES" lang=ES><FONT
size=3>En la esquina opuesta había una casita de ladrillos rojos. El musgo los
tapizaba y entre sus junturas florecían diminutas plantas silvestres
independientes de las estaciones, invisibles para los gatos que habían hecho
suyo el tejado en declive por el que escurría la lluvia o se agitaba el polvo,
según la temporada.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

size=3>Si no hubiera sido porque empecé a trabajar con Elvira Manso jamás habría
imaginado que existía esa calle y mucho menos que por una larga temporada la
acera norte sería mi destino de lunes a viernes, de cinco de la tarde a ocho de
la noche.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES" lang=ES><FONT
size=3>La primera vez que acudí a Florines tuve la esperanza de que mi paradero
fuera la casa de estilo francés. Toqué el timbre. Se asomó por la ventana una
muchacha con la cabeza envuelta en una tela blanca. Me di cuenta de que la había
interrumpido en su trabajo por el tono áspero con que me dijo que ese era el 12
y no el 101 que yo buscaba. Lo encontré al final de la calle sobre la puerta de
la casa de ladrillo en donde vivía Elvira Manso.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES" lang=ES><FONT
size=3>Llamé a la puerta y enseguida me abrió una mujer pequeña, redonda, sin
cuello, pulcramente vestida de gris que me recordó al hada madrina de
Cenicienta. Me invitó a que pasara. El aire olía a cera y a especias. Elvira me
condujo a la sala que en realidad funcionaba más bien como oficina. Las paredes
estaban recubiertas de anaqueles con libros y en el centro había una mesa con
una máquina de escribir hundida entre papeles. Le advierto que aquí no tengo
computadora. ¿Le importa? No esperó mi respuesta y se puso a leer mis
referencias.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES" lang=ES><FONT
size=3>Satisfecha, me preguntó el motivo de mi interés por trabajar con ella.
Fui sincera. Estaba cansada del ambiente de la fábrica en donde había sido
secretaria. Renuncié sin pensarlo y en el supuesto de que con mi experiencia
sería fácil insertarme en otro ambiente. Las consecuencias fueron ocho meses de
desempleo en que me convertí otra vez en hija de familia. En medio de la
desesperanza, por casualidad leí su anuncio en el periódico: “Persona interesada
en realizar trabajo secretarial favor de comunicarse al
teléfono…”<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES" lang=ES><FONT
size=3>Elvira parecía muy divertida con mi historia y me pidió que siguiera
adelante, aunque lo que fuera a decirle ella lo supiese al menos
parcialmente.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

size=3>Le conté que de inmediato marqué el número. Me tranquilizó oír una voz
femenina enérgica: Diga usted. Expliqué el motivo de mi

size=3>En respuesta mi interlocutora hizo una serie de preguntas acerca de mis
trabajos anteriores y al final si podría presentarle dos cartas de
recomendación. Le dije que sí. Hizo una pausa y me dio las indicaciones para que

size=3>Correspondió a mi sinceridad con la suya. Me explicó que durante muchos
años había sido maestra de literatura en una secundaria. Cuando se agudizó su
artritis y se vio obligada a separarse del magisterio, un antiguo amigo,
propietario de una modesta editorial que publicaba libros infantiles y
juveniles, la invitó a colaborar en ellos. Un tiempo pudo cumplir con las
entregas mensuales sin necesidad de ayuda, pero cuando su mal se agravó, no tuvo
más remedio que buscar el apoyo de alguien dispuesto a tomarle al dictado sus
historias. Esa fue mi ocupación durante cinco años.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES" lang=ES><FONT
size=3>A pesar de las dificultades fueron maravillosos, divertidos y
sorprendentes. Por la forma en que Elvira concebía sus historias se calificaba
como una ladrona. Cuando iba a la calle para hacer compras, trámites o entregar
sus materiales en la editorial se llenaba de escenas callejeras, frases oídas al
azar, fisonomías, fachadas, objetos invisibles para otros que atesoraba en su
memoria, segura de que en algún momento de inspiración iban a servirle para
urdir un cuento quizá demasiado inocente a través del cual trataba de corregir
injusticias y aberraciones.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES" lang=ES><FONT
size=3>Los ancianos solitarios, los niños comerciantes abandonados a los
peligros de la ciudad y los animales que descubría prisioneros en un balcón o a
las puertas de un comercio eran sus obsesiones. Con frecuencia me dictaba
historias en que los viejos se reunían con sus familias que los habían
abandonado, los niños contaban sus sueños sin que nadie los interrumpiera
obligándolos a guardar silencio, y las mascotas conquistaban su libertad en
nuevos espacios.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES" lang=ES><FONT
size=3>Supongo que Elvira jamás supo quiénes fueron los lectores de sus
ficciones. Las concibo como caleidoscopios en donde pequeños trozos de vidrio,
al agitarse, integran figuras maravillosas y únicas que al desaparecer dan
origen a otras.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES" lang=ES><FONT
size=3>Por mi parte, ignoro quién habrá sido o será lector de las narraciones
escritas por Elvira Manso. Yo fui una de ellos y con el privilegio adicional de
haber seguido, al ritmo de la máquina de escribir, la construcción de mundos
felices que tal vez nunca existieron ni existirán más allá de las páginas
concebidas en aquella casa de ladrillo rojo.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; mso-ansi-language: ES" lang=ES><FONT
size=3>No quiero pensar en Elvira Manso muerta. Prefiero suponer que si no la
veo es porque sigue en su infatigable caminata por las calles en busca de una
fisonomía, una sombra, un objeto, una frase, un trozo de vidrio para empezar de
nuevo a urdir con palabras sus relatos, sus
caleidoscopios.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
