ver las novias. Suspira: “Ay, señorita Diana, cuándo la veré a usted así”. Y
examina infatigable los rostros de cada uno de las felices desposadas. “Mire, a
esta le va a ir de la patada…” “A esta otra pue' que y se le haga…” “Esta ya se
viene fijando en otro. Ya ni la amuela. Creo que es el padrino…” Sigue hablando
de las novias obsesiva y maligna. Con sus uñas puntiagudas —“me las corto de
triangulito, pa arañar, así se las había de limar la señorita”—, rasga el papel
y bruscamente desaparece la nariz del novio, o la gentil contrayente queda
ciega: “Mire niña Diana, qué chistosos se ven ahora los palomos”. Le entra una
risa larga, larga, larga, entrecortada de gritos subversivos: “Hi ¡Hi! ¡Hi! ¡Hi!
¡Hiiii!”, que sacude su pequeño cuerpo de arriba abajo. “No te rías tanto,
Esperanza, que te va a dar hipo”. <o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

sin ninguno!”. Ella cuenta: “Uno era decente, un señor ingeniero, fíjese usted.
Nos sentábamos el uno al lado del otro en una banca del parque y a mí me daba
vergüenza decirle que era criada y me quede silencia”. </SPAN><SPAN lang=ES

al ingeniero por un “equivocado”. Su afición al teléfono la llevaba a entablar
largas conversaciones. “no señor, está usted equivocado. Esta no es la familia
que usted busca, pero ojalá y fuera”. “Carnicería ‘La Fortuna'” “No, es una casa
particular pero qué fortuna…” Todavía hoy, a los cuarenta y ocho años, sigue al
acecho de los equivocados. Corre al teléfono con una alegría expectante:
“Caballero yo no soy Laura Martínez, soy Esperanza…” Y a la vez siguiente: “Mi
nombre es otro, pero en ¿qué puedo servirle?” ¡Cuánto correo del corazón!
Cuántos “Nos vemos en la puerta del cine Encanto. Voy a llevar un vestido verde
y un moño rojo en la cabeza”… ¡Cuántas citas fallidas! ¡Cuántas idas a la
esquina a ver partir las esperanzas! Cuántos: “¡Ya me colgaron!” Pero Esperanza
se rehace pronto y tres o cuatro días después, allí está nuevamente en servicio
dándole vuelta al disco, metiendo el dedo en todos los números, componiendo
cifras al azar a ver si de pronto alguien le contesta y le dice como Pedro
Infante: “¿Quiere usted casarse conmigo?” Compostura, estropicio, teléfono
descompuesto, 02, 04, mala manera de descolgarse por la vida, como una araña que
se va hasta el fondo del abismo colgada del hilo del teléfono. Y otra vez a
darle a esa negra carátula de reloj donde marcamos puras horas falsas, puros:
“Voy a pedir permiso”, puros: “Es que la señora no me deja…”, puros: “¿Qué de
qué?” porque Esperanza no atina y ya le está dando el cuarto para las doce.

por sorpresa, Esperanza respondió: “Pues mire usted ingeniero, ultimadamente y
viéndolo bien, a mí me gusta mi leche sin nata”. Y le quitó la mano.

con mil burbujas de agua. Arriba sólo se oye el chapoteo del aire sobre las
sábanas mojadas. Y a pesar de los pequeños toldos de lámina, siento como un gran
ruido de manantial. El motor de los coches que pasan por la calle llega
atenuado; jamás sube completamente. La ciudad ha quedado atrás; retrocede, se
pierde en el fondo de la memoria. <o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN lang=ES

size=3>Las manos se inflaman, van y vienen, calladas; los dedos chatos, las uñas
en la piedra, duras como huesos, eternas como conchas de mar. Enrojecidas de
agua, las manos se inclinan como si fueran a dormirse, a caer sobre la funda de
la almohada. Pero no. La terca mirada de doña Otilia las reclama. Las recoge.
Allí está el jabón, el pan de a cincuenta centavos y la jícara morena que hace
saltar el agua. Las lavanderas tienen el vientre humedecido de tanto recargarlo
en la piedra porosa y la cintura incrustada de gotas que un buen día estallarán.

Tequisquiapan y lo querían mucho el señor cura y los fieles. En la procesión, él
era quien le seguía al señor cura, el que se quedaba en el segundo escalón
durante la santa misa, bueno, le tenían mucho respeto. Subió a dar las seis como
siempre, y así, sin aviso, sin darse cuenta siquiera, la campana lo tumbó de la
torre. Y repite doña Lupe más bajo aún, las manos llenas de espuma blanca.
