The David Suzuki Foundation (a national conservation NGO in Canada) is
seeking to hire a Biodiversity Policy Analyst to join our nature
conservation team. The position will be based in either Toronto or Ottawa,
Canada. The responsibility of the Biodiversity Policy Analyst is to research
and develop novel policies for the restoration and protection of key
ecosystem services that support both ecological integrity and human welfare
in Canada .  This will include work on pollinator conservation in Canada.

Position:              Biodiversity Policy Analyst, Sustainability
 
Reporting:          The Biodiversity Policy Analyst reports to the
Sustainability Program Director with a special working relationship with the
Science Director.
About us:     Since 1990, the David Suzuki Foundation has worked to find
ways for society to live in balance with the natural world that sustains us.
Focusing on four program areas - oceans and sustainable fishing, climate
change and clean energy, and the sustainability project - the Foundation
uses science and education to promote solutions that help conserve nature. 
About the role: The responsibility of the Biodiversity Policy Analyst is to
research and develop novel policies for the restoration and protection of
key ecosystem services that support both ecological integrity and human
welfare in Canada (e.g., pollination services, disease suppression, habitat
for species at risk).  This will include: developing relationships with key
government officials, developing and implementing strategies which will
contribute to the awareness and support of the public, developing networks
among ENGOs and opinion leader groups, and contributing to the policy
proposals and briefing notes in support of the protection of critical
ecosystem services detrimentally impacted by human land use.   A particular
focus of this position will be the protection of terrestrial biodiversity at
risk in Canada, especially wildlife found in highly impacted regions of the
country (southern Ontario). 
 
This is a full-time position, and will commence as soon as possible. The
position will be based in Ottawa or Toronto and travel will be required.
The Foundation offers a 4-day workweek as well as an extensive benefits
package. Bilingualism (English and French) is a very strong asset. 
 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.       Strategic Planning and Campaigning: 
*         Develop and implement outreach/campaign activities that build
awareness and support for the protection of biodiversity, in particular
those species associated with the provision of key ecosystem services such
as pollination and/or are at risk.
*         Work collaboratively with provincial and national species at risk
campaigns for the application of federal (SARA) and Ontario endangered
species legislation to protect biodiversity.
*         Initiate, scope, plan, and deliver specific outreach projects,
events and initiatives, including project schedules, proposals and budgets.
*         Identify opportunities for earned media and public education.
 
2.       Network Building
*	Develop relationship with the most influential government officials
responsible for implementing policies related to terrestrial land use, in
particular the agricultural sector. 
*	Based on a strategic assessment, attend meetings and maintain
ongoing contact with other organizations active on biodiversity protection.
Integrate information and assess the significance and implications of policy
positions and strategies. 

*	Build and maintain networks among ENGOs, and other opinion leader
groups who share the goals and objectives of DSF's biodiversity campaigns. 
*	Work cooperatively and collaboratively with other DSF staff on
networking. 

*	Feed communications loops within DSF with relevant information on
events, discussions and meetings. 
 
3.       Writing and Research  
*         Monitor and analyze emerging policies and science in ecosystem
services (e.g., Millennium Ecosystem Assessment)
*         Contribute to discussion papers, technical reports, briefing
notes, presentations, correspondence, and communication backgrounders.
*         Organize and maintain related files.
 
4.       Policy development: 
*         Research into trade-based (e.g., certification) and policy-based
(e.g., tax incentives, payment for services) incentives that could be used
to reward environmental stewardship for the protection of ecosystem services
on private land.
*         Research into necessary regulations or laws that could prohibit or
minimize the most destructive land use practices that threaten the provision
of key ecosystem services (e.g., pesticides).
*	Participate in briefings for decision-makers, media and others, and
work effectively in meetings and committees both internally and externally. 
 
5.       Other related duties, as required.
 
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
*	Bilingual (English and French) is a very strong asset 

*	Graduate degree or equivalent experience 

*	At least 3 - 5 years of previous successful experience in policy
development or analysis 

*	Expertise in and knowledge of ecosystem services. Particular
expertise in pollination services is a strong asset. 

*	Expertise with Endangered Species Legislation (SARA), Canada's
Biodiversity Strategy and other federal and Ontario laws and polices that
impact biodiversity, particularly species at risk. 

*	Expertise with federal and Ontario government policies that impact
biodiversity in the agricultural sector is a strong asset. 

*	Expertise with the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and other major
policy research on ecosystem services (e.g., research on the valuation of
natural capital). 

*	Superior strategic planning abilities; results-oriented 

*	Demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Familiarity with
technical writing and ability to interpret technical material for general
audiences. Confident and motivating communicator. 

*	Practical understanding of legal issues, public policy development
process and socio-economic analysis. 

*	Strong project management skills-can balance reactive daily tasks
with planning and stewarding longer-term projects 

*	Well-developed influencing, negotiating and sales skills; the
ability to empower and motivate the public, volunteers and others in
carrying out campaign tactics 

*	Able to manage own workload without close supervision and works
independently, making decisions and solving problems on routine and complex
problems 

*	Able to work effectively in a dynamic team environment, in a
flexible office environment with periods of high pressure activity 

*	Excellent networking skills, alliance-building experience 

*	Ability to work independently 

*	Ability to work under pressure and manage time effectively is
essential 

*	Computer skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, Email
