Here Today, Gone Tomorrow?
A Tale of Two Butterflies!

Saturday, May 20, 2006
Butterfly Walk! Lecture!

Come hear the contrasting tale of two butterfly species of San Mateo County. One, the Bay checkerspot, existed in dense populations on the San Francisco peninsula in the 1960s, but is now locally extinct. The second, Gillette's checkerspot, has such specific habitat needs and small populations its continued persistence is a paradox.

Join Carol Boggs of the Center For Conservation Biology at Stanford University as she reveals the reasons underlying the butterflies' contrasting fates which highlight unexpected yet important aspects of species' extinction. After the presentation we will take a butterfly walk near Pescadero Marsh. Potential sightings include ringlets, swallowtails, whites, blues, sulfurs, and tortoise shells!
