Twenty-first Century Ecosystems: Systemic Risk and the Public Good

An NAS Symposium on the Science and Policy for Managing the Living World Two Centuries after Darwin

Wednesday February 11-Thursday February 12, 2009

Opening Reception: Tuesday evening, Feb. 10 at the NAS Koshland Museum

The Symposium will be held in the AAAS Auditorium at

1200 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, DC.

ADMISSION IS FREE, BUT REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED

The National Academy of Sciences and its US National Committee for DIVERSITAS are pleased to request your participation in a symposium in honor of the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin. The goal of the symposium is to focus attention on both the opportunities for designing policies that strengthen and make use of biodiversity and ecosystem services - and the dangers of pursuing policies that put ecosystems at risk.

Speakers will discuss the importance of biodiversity and ecosystems to the public good, and examine the intersection of biodiversity and ecosystem services with key policy issues including climate change and energy; trade, pests and pathogens; and food security. The presentations and discussions at the symposium will be summarized and published in a National Academy workshop report.

Speakers will include Sir Peter Crane (University of Chicago), Cristián Samper (Director, National Museum of Natural History), Steve Schneider (Stanford University), Michael Donoghue (VP, Yale University) Achim Steiner (Director, UNEP), Yadvinder Mahli (Oxford University), Bruce Babbitt (former Secretary of the Interior), and scientists and policy makers from around the world.

Conference Sponsorship - Show your commitment to ecosystem health and biodiversity by sponsoring the Twenty-first Century Ecosystems: Systemic Risk and the Public Good. Please contact Maggie Goud Collins for more information (mcollins at nas.edu).

Conference registration opens in late December. For additional details, visit the USNC/DIVERSITAS website (http://www7.nationalacademies.org/usnc-diversitas/index.html, or contact Avihai Ostchega via email at aostchega at nas.edu
