Subject: Call for Nominations

Dear Colleagues,

If you would like to nominate a deserving colleague for the AAPA Award of
Excellence, send your nominations to Marion Ellis, Chair of the selection
committee. The nomination process is simple and consists of a letter with
the signature of 3 nominators. The meeting dates are coming up soon, so you
will need to move quickly for there to be a 2009 recipient.

AAPA Award for Apicultural Excellence

Each year the American Association for Professional Apiculturists will
entertain nominations for a national honor called the Award for Apicultural
Excellence. Only active or emeritus AAPA members are eligible for
nomination. A member can receive this award only once.
Selection of the recipient will be based on the quality of his or her
contributions to the field of apiculture. Areas of expertise may include one
or more of the following (or any other honey bee-related specialty):

1. Apicultural Research Activities

Candidate is recognized as having made significant contributions to the
field of honey bee research. His or her accomplishments have advanced the
understanding of one or more specific aspects of apiculture such as bee
biology (e.g., behavior, genetics, physiology, or diseases); colony
management, crop pollination, pollinator protection, etc. Results of these
accomplishments have been disseminated through appropriate publications.

2. Apicultural Extension Activities

Candidate is recognized as having made significant contributions to the
field of apicultural extension. He or she has a very strong record of acting
as a liaison between the research community and others who benefit from
receiving information about honey bees and other pollinators. Clientele
contacts are expected to include many of the following: university and USDA
ARS researchers; county extension personnel; hobby, sideline, and commercial
beekeepers; national, regional, and local beekeeping organizations and
commodity boards; regulatory personnel, legislative contacts; grower groups,
and various groups among the general public.

3. Apicultural Regulatory Activities

Candidate is recognized as having made significant contributions in
regulatory aspects of apiculture. He or she has demonstrated a sincere
desire to formulate and champion laws and regulations that benefit the
entire industry while protecting the individual. Effective leadership in
this area would include contributions such as working with local beekeepers
to determine their regulatory needs; relating those needs to administrators
and legislators; and relaying industry concerns to regulatory groups (e.g.,
A.I.A., Plant Boards, NASDA, and USDA APHIS).

4. Apicultural Teaching Activities

Candidate is recognized as having made significant contributions in the area
of apicultural instruction. Specific examples should relate how he or she
positively impacted audiences through teaching efforts. While formal
classroom teaching is emphasized, materials developed for mass distribution
deserve recognition. Creativity and innovation in the classroom, as it
relates to appreciation by the students and its ability to foster learning,
are key considerations.

Nomination forms can be obtained from the AAPA Secretary/Treasurer.
Completed forms, including signatures from three nominators, will be
submitted to the Chair of the three person Selection Committee.

Selection Committee members, appointed by the AAPA President from the active
membership, will reach a consensus on a potential recipient. The Committee
Chair will then submit the choice, with written justification, to the
Officers of AAPA for approval.

Following approval by AAPA Officers, the President will inform the recipient
of the choice and invite the recipient to attend the next Annual Business
Meeting to receive the award. The award recipient will receive a plaque
engraved with his or her name, the title of the award, and the date and
place at which the award was presented.
