FISH AND WILDLIFE: Operations chief to serve as agency's acting director
(Monday, February 22, 2010)

Allison Winter, E&E reporter

A career Fish and Wildlife Service biologist who currently oversees agency
operations was picked today as acting director.

Rowan Gould, the deputy director of operations, will temporarily replace Sam
Hamilton, who died Saturday. The decision was made at a meeting of agency
leaders this afternoon, spokesman Chris Tollefson said.

Gould is stepping into the role he had before President Obama nominated
Hamilton to lead the agency last year. Gould served as acting director from
January 2009 until Hamilton was confirmed last August.

Hamilton, 54, died Saturday in Colorado after experiencing chest pains while
skiing. The Summit County coroner said Hamilton's cause of death was
consistent with an underlying heart condition.

Prior to being named a deputy director in 2008, Gould was assistant director
for wildlife and sport fish restoration. He has also been regional director
of the Alaska Region, deputy assistant director for fisheries in Washington,
D.C., and deputy regional director for the Pacific Region.

Gould started his service career as a research microbiologist at the Seattle
National Research Center in 1976. He has served in numerous research
positions, including as section chief at the National Fisheries Research
Center in Seattle and as director of the National Fisheries Research and
Development Laboratory in Wellsboro, Pa.

An Oregon native, he received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees
in fish health and biology from Oregon State University.
