The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation is pleased to announce the
first results from our milkweed seed increase program: a new source of
native California milkweed seed for use in large-scale restoration projects
across the Central Valley -- and we have several pounds of this seed to give
away!

Working with the Xerces Society,

California, produced 70 pounds of narrow-leaved milkweed (Asclepias
fascicularis) seed during the 2010 growing season. Thanks to this success,
the Xerces Society is offering seed, free of charge, to agencies, land
managers, and conservation groups working on native plant, pollinator, or
monarch butterfly conservation projects in California's Central Valley (see
additional details below). To support the seed increase work in California,
we have developed a guide to the state's native milkweeds (available for
download below).

We continue to work with Hedgerow Farms to establish seed production fields
for additional California milkweed species, and have similar efforts
underway in other critical regions of the monarch's breeding range. To read

Free Native Milkweed Seed!
For a limited time, the Xerces Society is offering narrow-leaved milkweed
seed (sourced from Yolo County) to agencies, land managers, and conservation
organizations for use in restoration and re-vegetation efforts in central
California. Please note that we will not provide seed to commercial seed
producers or for the purpose of rearing butterflies in captivity. To request
seed (minimum quantities of 1/4 pound), please contact Brianna Borders,
Plant Ecologist, at (855) 232-6639 or <mailto:brianna at xerces.org>
brianna at xerces.org. The seed is available free of charge on a first-come,
first-served basis.

Narrow-leaved milkweed is a perennial wildflower that grows in dry to moist
soils in open, sunny areas. It is the most widespread milkweed species in
California, growing in every region of the state except the Sonoran Desert
and the upper montane, subalpine, and alpine zones of the Sierra Nevada. The
species flowers from May to October.

It is too late to plant milkweed seed this spring. We recommend planting it
after the first fall rains, once the soil is moist. Seed planted in the fall
will not germinate until the following spring. For successful establishment,
it will be important to keep the planted area free of competition from
weeds.

Central Valley Pollinator Conservation Seed Mix
The Xerces Society and Hedgerow Farms are also selling a native seed mix
designed to provide foraging and nesting resources for pollinators in
California's Central Valley. The mix contains a variety of source-identified
native wildflowers and bunch grasses, including a range of species that will
provide bloom throughout the entire growing season.

native milkweeds of California. The guide provides an overview of common
milkweeds occurring in the state, distribution maps, photos, and general
habitat requirements. Because milkweeds are a highly valuable nectar source
for many pollinators, including native bees, managed honey bees, and
hummingbirds, this guide is a must-have for anyone working on pollinator
conservation projects in California. The California guide was developed with
support from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Additional
guides to the native milkweeds of other states, as well as habitat
restoration guidelines, will be available soon.
