Honeybee-pollinated almonds are such an important part of California
agriculture. Some of you may be familiar with this paper (published 2003)
but I stumbled across it only an hour ago.
This may be increasingly important as a number of apiarists and
agro-ecologists emphasize that honeybees are not getting a good diet when
they are moved from mono-culture to monoculture in North America. It also
tends to explain why those honeybees appear to prefer visiting the weeds
UNDER the trees to the almond twigs in flower. We might also consider what
this means in suburban and urban sites when ornamental almonds are planted
for early spring color.
