*Touchdown for the Bees! *

*Pollinator Partnership (P2) Receives Funding from NFL to Plant *

*Trees for Bees at Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center*

This year’s Super Bowl 50, taking place at Levi’s Stadium on February 7th,
is set to be the greenest yet. The *National Football League* *(NFL)*,
*Verizon* and the *San Francisco Bay Area Super Bowl 50 Host Committee*
have developed a community matching grant program to fund urban
tree-planting projects throughout the Bay Area to give back to this year’s
host city. As part of this program, the *Pollinator Partnership (P2)* has
partnered with *Laguna Honda Hospital* *and Rehabilitation Center* in San
Francisco to plant 26 native trees to provide vital habitat for local
pollinator species.

The trees, including Bay Area natives like Bigleaf Maple, California Bay
Laurel, Islais Cherry, and Blue Blossom Ceanothus, were planted on January
28th at Laguna Honda. A planting ceremony coinciding with Laguna Honda’s 150
th anniversary celebration was attended by Pollinator Partnership and
Laguna Honda representatives, as well as hospital residents. Gratitude tags
were hung on each tree to symbolize the hospital’s appreciation, and a
ceremonial ribbon cutting opened the area to the community.

"These trees will provide much needed food and habitat for local
pollinators, as well as enhance the natural beauty of Laguna Honda’s
grounds for the staff and residents,” says *Pollinator Partnership
Executive Director Laurie Davies Adams*. She adds, “We hope this serves as
a learning opportunity for the local community to understand the importance
of pollinators to the ecosystem, even in urban environments, and how simple
acts like planting a tree can support populations.”

Pollinator Partnership and Laguna Honda have collaborated previously. In
2001, through P2’s gardening program, a garden space was created for Laguna
Honda’s Palliative Care unit. The garden not only provided a living habitat
for pollinators but also enhanced the urban environment for residents of
Laguna Honda. Residents on the unit were able to learn and explore through
a different outlet. The planting of the 26 new trees will now provide
therapeutic value for all residents who wish to explore the outside Laguna
Honda campus

“We are delighted to receive these trees and support San Francisco’s local
wildlife. Our residents will benefit so much from the added nature in their
lives,” says *Laguna Honda Hospital Chief Operations Officer John Grimes*.
