NOW is the time  for Beekeepers to FIGHT THE MITE!
We have reached that time of year when the rate of varroa mite reproduction in the capped pupa cells exceeds the rate of new bees, peaking by October. It is further intensified by the drifting and robbing of bees in the Fall. Add to this the various viruses the mites pass-on (vector). The health of the bees that must survive the winter is now being affected.

1) How to check for mites , http://nybeewellness.org/diagnostics/mite-check/ , there are different options, all are easy to do

2) Do your mite count now and every 3 weeks, the levels may change dramatically soon.

3) As nectar becomes more scarce towards the Fall, robbing will commence, transferring mites; Also, weak, mite infested colonies' bees abscond from their hives and deliver their mites to other, healthier colonies. Theses are bees from poorly managed hives or feral hives.

4) Chose your method of management and treatment, then check for mites again.

5) Compare your mite counts on the NY Bee Wellness mapping site, there is also virus and nosema map for NYS. On the national level there is Mite-A-Thon.

| From the July NY Bee Wellness Workshop
We are honored to have had 2 great educators/researchers instruct beekeepers at Morrisville State College, for the 3 day NY Bee Wellness workshop: Dr. Medhat Nasr of Alberta, and Dr. Jennifer Tsurda from Clemson University.
Videos and photos to be uploaded when available.
Enthusiastic attendees came from all areas of NYS (Long Island, NYC, Western, Northern, Eastern, Central), Vermont and Pennsylvania. The field day honey bee colonies were loaned by Johnston's Bees, and the AFB Vita kits used in the lab were donated by the Waverly Dadants. Helping with logistics was volunteer Patrick Dwyer of Cooperstown.
 Things learned:
"Make sure you check hive regular, don't over treat for mites and make sure your bees are healthy with a good population and plenty of food for overwintering. "
"To be vigilant in checking for varroa mites"
"The Bee Health app suggested by Medhat will be very helpful going forward."

| American Foul Brood (AFB) Reports on the rise
NYS Ag & Markets has recorded 12 incidents of AFB this year, in different locales (Long Island, Erie County, North Country).
Separately, regional beekeepers also report incidences of AFB in other areas with some concern about purchased nucs.

1) For info on AFB, including videos, visit the AFB link sheet.
2)  AFB is a contagious reportable disease, like Foot and Mouth disease in hoofed animals.
  3) Please inspect your hives now to check the brood. In the Fall robbers will invade hives infected with AFB and spread the spores to other hives.
4) If you need help, contact an experienced beekeeper, a local bee club, or NYS Ag & Markets.
5)  You can also order the VITA AFB Kit from bee supply dealers, for immediate results.
Below is a cardinal sign of AFB: roping out of dead pupae

Northeastern Region Honey Bee Colonies Report (PDF)
Contains info for beekeepers with less than 5 colonies, and those with more than 5 colonies.
These statistics are from the Colony Loss Survey, which the National Agricultural Statistics Service conducted for the first time in May 2015. The survey collects information required by the White House Pollinator Health Task Force’s National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators. It provides a statistical benchmark on colony numbers and death loss. |

| Beltsville Diagnostic Lab is back in business  Samples received of adult bees and beeswax comb (with and without bee brood) are examined for bacterial, fungal and microsporidian diseases as well as for two species of parasitic mites and other pests associated with honey bees (i.e., small hive beetle, Aethina tumida). When requested, American foulbrood samples are cultured and isolates are screened for their sensitivity to Terramycin (oxytetracycline) and Tylan (tylosin).    LINK |
