As a new position, the Education Program Specialist of the Insect
Biodiversity Center (IBC) will be responsible for developing and
implementing new and existing educational and experiential programs for the
public, K-12 groups, undergraduate students, and other stakeholders. These
programs will leverage and support research activities of Insect
Biodiversity Center faculty, students, and staff. These programs will
primarily be offered through The Arboretum at Penn State’s Pollinator and
Bird Garden, a new 3.5-acre garden which will open to the public in spring
2021. The Program's Coordinator Education Program Specialist will work
directly with the IBC’s Director of Pollinator Programs, Arboretum staff,
and Center faculty, to develop, publicize, coordinate, and execute
mission-related classes, workshops, events, and other experiences in the
Arboretum, as well as other venues such as the Frost Entomological Museum
and the Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center. Entrepreneurial initiative and
ability to integrate well with the Arboretum team will be key
attributes. This new position is part of the plan to grow educational
programming and resources for research activities at the Arboretum through
the Insect Biodiversity Center. This is a fixed term position funded for
one year from date of hire with an excellent possibility of refunding.

The position will be at the University Park campus of Penn State. The
13-square-mile campus is home to more than 46,000 graduate, professional,
and undergraduate students and more than 12,000 full time employees
(faculty and staff). University Park is pedestrian and bike-friendly and
features a mix of historic classroom buildings, modern architecture, and
beautiful landscaping. State College is a quintessential college town with
a diverse population that offers residents many of the amenities of a
larger urban environment, including a vibrant athletics program and
performing arts community. State College is surrounded by multiple state
parks which provide ample opportunity for outdoor recreation, and is within
a few hours’ drive of New York, Washington, Philadelphia, Baltimore and
Pittsburgh. State College is consistently ranked among the nation’s most
livable cities.

Responsibilities:

   - Together with Arboretum staff, develop and deliver outdoor place-based
   educational programming including workshops, courses, tours on pollinators
   and insect biodiversity for diverse audiences, including the public, K-12
   groups, undergraduate students, adult learners, and other stakeholders
   - Develop and disseminate informational materials about different themes
   and sub-gardens within the Garden through print and digital media
   - Contribute and integrate pollinator-related information to Arboretum’s
   searchable database of all the plants in the Pollinator and Bird Garden
   - Coordinate with research partners (Insect Biodiversity Center, Center
   for Pollinator Research, Center for Immersive Experiences, Penn State
   Herbarium, College of Education) on developing resources and programs
   - Create and archive series of articles/videos describing seasonal
   patterns in insect and plant communities at the Arboretum, to promote the
   Arboretum and ultimately generate a comprehensive visitors’ guide
   - Work with Arboretum staff and Insect Biodiversity Center members to
   create and offer new programming for Pollinator Week
   - Assist in monitoring insect and plant community across season and
   years using standard scientific practices

Education and Experience:

   - Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) with 2 years of experience in
   Entomology, Ecology, Plant Sciences, Horticulture,
   Recreation/Parks/Tourism Management, or another relevant field of study
   - Experience in scientific communication and educational program
   planning, development, oversight, and budgeting
   - Experience working with and leading teams
   - Excellent written and oral communication skills
   - Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
   - Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects, prioritize, and operate
   successfully in a fast-paced work setting
