the environment has yielded another result for our community. In response to a
suggestion made by Mr. Dewar in September 2007, the National Capital Commission
(NCC) has decided to modify its mowing standards to leave a broader stretch of
uncut meadow near the <st1:place w:st="on">Ottawa River</st1:place>. “I am very
pleased with the change in the NCC practice” said Dewar, “this is a positive
step in protecting meadow habitat on the <st1:place w:st="on">Ottawa
River</st1:place>”. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt">The area along the <st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address
w:st="on">Ottawa River Parkway</st1:address></st1:Street> behind the <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Canadian</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">War</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">Museum</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> is an important habitat for Monarch
butterflies, a</SPAN></FONT><SPAN lang=EN-US> species of Special Concern under
the Federal Species at Risk Act. “There is no reason why the milkweed by the
<st1:place w:st="on">Ottawa River</st1:place> should be mowed down. Having
vegetation along a waterway is an important factor in contribu</SPAN><FONT
size=2><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt">ting to healthy waterways and
overall biodiversity” said Mr. Dewar.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

constituent Rachel Plotkin, </SPAN></FONT><FONT size=2><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt">a policy analyst for the David Suzuki Foundation, who
focuses on endangered species. Ms. Plotkin expressed her satisfaction with the
positive result in preserving the meadow habitat: “We are delighted to see this
action taken by the NCC. The protection of milkweed is a critical tool in
protecting the Monarch Butterfly”.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

the NCC, stated “I appreciate your suggestion to help protect biodiversity and

réponse à une suggestion faite par M. Dewar en septembre 2007, la Commission de
la capitale nationale (CCN) a décidé de modifier ses normes de fauchage, de
façon à laisser une bordure intacte le long de la rivière des Outaouais.
« Je suis très fier de ce changement dans les méthodes de <st1:PersonName
w:st="on" ProductID="la CCN. Il">la CCN. Il</st1:PersonName> s’agit d’une étape
positive dans la protection de l’habitat sur la rivière des Outaouais », a
expliqué M. Dewar. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

Outaouais derrière le Musée canadien de la guerre est un important habitat pour
les papillons monarques, une espèce préoccupante au sens de la Loi sur les
espèces en péril. « Il n’y aucune raison de couper l’herbe près de la
rivière des Outaouais. Le maintien de la végétation sur les rives d’un courant
d’eau est très important pour la santé des rivières et la biodiversité en
général », a ajouté M. Dewar.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

concitoyenne, Rachel Plotkin, analyste des politiques pour <st1:PersonName

Suzuki</st1:PersonName>, qui se concentre sur les espèces en voie de
disparition. Mme Plotkin s’est dite satisfaite de la protection de l’habitat en
question : « Nous sommes heureux de la mesure prise par

protection des asclépiades va de pair avec la protection du papillon
