July, 2010

By popular request, The Xerces Society's full day Pollinator
Conservation Planning Short Course will return to Wisconsin in August
2010. The Short Course will be offered at five locations to accommodate
the ongoing demand.

The Short Course is an intensive, day-long professional
development program designed to equip conservationist, land managers,
farm educators, and agricultural professionals with the latest
science-based approaches to increasing crop security and reversing the
trend of pollinator decline, especially in heavily managed agricultural
landscapes.

This training, previously offered across the Upper Midwest in
2008 and 2009 has helped launch numerous habitat restoration efforts
across the region including projects conducted by the USDA Natural
Resources Conservation Service, individual farmers, and state agencies
such as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' Roadsides for
Pollinators Initiative.

Specific Short Course Topics include the basic principles of
pollinator biology, the economics of insect pollination, recognizing
native bee species, and assessment of pollinator habitat. Advanced
modules cover farm management practices for pollinator protection, basic
habitat restoration (including selecting appropriate plants) and using
Farm Bill conservation programs to help farmers restore native
wildflower habitat. An overview of additional funding sources and
technical support available to land managers is also provided.
Throughout the workshop these training modules are illustrated by real
case studies of pollinator conservation efforts from across the country,
and are supported by field sessions to examine live pollinators and
habitat features wherever possible.

The Xerces Society for Invertebrate
Conservation is an international non-profit organization that protects
wildlife through the conservation of invertebrates and their habitat.
Launched in 1996, the Xerces Society's Pollinator Conservation Program
works with leading native pollinator ecologists to translate the latest
research findings into on-the-ground conservation. Our Pollinator Conservation Resource Center provides access to all one needs to complete a pollinator conservation project in any region of the United States.
