<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0pt"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt"><FONT face="Times New Roman">Ambassador Kathleen Stephens travelled to Cheonan April
22 to help local farmers and volunteers pollinate pear trees, a staple of the
local economy.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Accompanied by U.S.
Agriculture Service officers, she toured a Horticulture & Agriculture
Cooperative where pears are inspected and packed for export.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Then she took the wheel of a
zero-emission electric Volt to drive her hostess Kim Mee (granddaughter of the
renowned Korean independence movement leader Kim Koo) and her husband (a
National Assemblyman) to a nearby pear orchard.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>There, following brief instructions by
the owner Ji Soon-tae, she donned boots and gloves and tried her hand at
pollination, using a fringed pollen-dusting device.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Her participation in this traditional
volunteer effort delighted the local community, while also bringing attention to
the environment (a growing worldwide shortage pollinators), the benefits of the
FTA (which will help local farmers who export to the U.S.), and technological
cooperation – the Detroit-built Volt is powered by a Korean-designed battery.
