The study was funded by a $32,204 Natural Resources Conservation Service Conservation Innovation Grant awarded to Rutgers entomologists in 2009 to develop science-based pollinator restoration protocols for use in Farm Bill conservation programs. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:12.0pt'><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Dr. Rachel Winfree and her associates established a total of 120 plots with twenty native plant species in September 2009 to learn if native pollinators that provide benefit to various New Jersey agricultural crops were attracted to these native plants. The use of each plant species by bee and butterfly pollinators was measured daily whenever plants were in bloom in 2010. A total of 4358 visits to flowers from 66 pollinator species were observed. Results were highly significant statistically. Overall nine of the twenty plant species are recommended for use in pollinator restorations. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:12.0pt'><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Agricultural producers and conservation organizations working with producers are encouraged to attend the September 30 workshop. In addition to Winfree’s lab research on native pollinators, sessions on the importance of pollinators, bee biology, the creation and protection of pollinator habitat on farmland, and available assistance for pollinator conservation through Farm Bill programs will be presented.
