The Historic Lewes Farmers Market presents the very best of mid-June fresh
produce this Saturday, June 15. The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon on the
grounds of the Lewes Historical Society at 110 Shipcarpenter St., at the corner
of West Third and Shipcarpenter streets. The HLFM is the largest producer-only
market in Delaware, again named Best Farmers Market by Delaware Today.

In addition to local honey, patrons will be thrilled to see their summer
favorites, and this week specials include Red Norland new potatoes, fava beans,
English and snap peas, gluten-free cheesecakes, garlic scapes and pork breakfast
links. Customers will find all of these and even more of the freshest fruits,
vegetables, meat, fish, chicken, eggs, milk, yogurt and more.

The HLFM newsletter, sent to patrons on Thursdays during the market season,
has local and national news, and features picks of the week. To receive the HLFM
newsletter, email historiclewesfarmersmarket@comcast.net
to be added to the HLFM subscription list.

Starting this year, the market is processing SNAP (EBT Food Stamps). To help
lower economic barriers to local healthy food, the HLFM will match up to $10 in
SNAP with HLFM “Bonus Bucks.” SNAP participants are encouraged to go to the SNAP
Information Tent at the market to redeem their Bonus Bucks.

This year, American Farmland Trust has a new “I Love my Farmers Market
Celebration.” The celebration raises national awareness about local farmers
markets and puts money directly in the pockets of family farmers. Consumers can
pledge dollars they intend to spend at the market. For more information, go to
www.farmland.org.

The HLFM presents a weekly demonstration as part of the market’s educational
series. This week’s demonstration by Dave Baues of Baues’ Busy Bees answers
questions about bees in celebrating National Pollinator Week. Given the current
concerns about Colony Collapse Disorder, Baues’ presentation - titled The Life
Cycle of the Hive and the Life Cycle of the Bee - could not be more timely.
Baues will have on hand an empty hive, hive tools, a veil (what he wears when
working with the bees) and, weather permitting, an observation hive. Among other
honey products, Baues' Busy Bees, a long-time market vendor, offers bee pollen,
a high protein food supplement that helps people suffering from pollen
allergies.

The Children’s Reading Program, an important aspect of HLFM’s efforts to help
children learn about healthy eating and nutrition, will feature Maureen Miller,
children’s librarian from Lewes Public Library, reading "Ten Seeds" by Ruth
Brown. "Ten Seeds" tells the story of the plant cycle in a delightful,
thoughtful way. Children will watch the journey of 10 seeds planted in the
garden as various creatures - one ant, one mouse, one pigeon, and others -
encounter the seeds. Although only one magnificent flower blooms from the 10
seeds, the flower drops 10 seeds and the cycle begins anew. Miller will read
"Ten Seeds" to the gathered children at 9 a.m. in the School House.

HLFM has adopted a policy that pets (with the exception of service animals)
are not permitted at its farmers market.

More information about the market is available at www.historiclewesfarmersmarket.org.
