Updated report looks at bee health, pollinator protection and
pesticide use

Pollination is an essential ecosystem service, and the honey bee the most
important species of pollinator. Pollination allows plants to reproduce;
providing the fruits, seeds and foliage that we eat, as well as much of the
flora in our natural environment, gardens and parks.

The newly published second edition of the report ‘Pollinators and
agriculture: Agricultural productivity and pollinator protection’,
highlights the importance of pollinators to agriculture and looks into measures
to protect and enhance pollinator populations and agricultural productivity.

The global trend for a decline in biodiversity has included pollinator
species, and where the iconic honey bee is concerned, parasites, climate change,
habitat loss, the availability of food, pollution, invasive alien species,
diseases and pesticides have all been implicated in intensified media and
academic coverage.

At a time of heightened anxiety surrounding the issue of honey bee health,
the report – co-authored by ECPA and ELO, with contribution from EISA –
describes the relationship between pollinators and agriculture, explores threats
to pollinator species, and pays special attention to the honey bee in
recognition of its importance to agriculture and the beekeeping industry.

Stakeholders including the crop protection industry and farmers must work
together to implement best practices to prevent species decline, and to promote
solutions that offer the best possible outcomes for biodiversity and
agricultural productivity.
