In turn, rangelands are essential to help maintain or recover pollinator populations. To help land managers incorporate pollinator-friendly practices into rangeland management, the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation developed Best Management Practices for Pollinators on Western Rangelands. These guidelines were developed for managed rangelands that span the eleven western United States: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming.

The best management practices were informed by a literature review and surveys and interviews with pollinator experts, ranchers, and land managers. Completed in June 2018, the BMPs provide actionable, practical recommendations that enable land managers to help conserve pollinators on rangelands in the West. Management practices addressed include grazing, mowing, prescribed fire, and pesticide use, as well as recommendations on how to address pollinators in restoration projects, control of invasive nonnative invasive plants, use of managed pollinators, recreation, and climate change impacts. Where applicable, the BMPs identify areas where there is overlap in management objectives for pollinators and other species such as greater sage-grouse, and they also provide specific sections on how to manage rangelands for the monarch butterfly. In addition, the BMPs outline methods to monitor pollinator populations, a comprehensive literature review, and tables detailing native pollinator phenology, conservation status, ecoregion associations, and habitat requirements.

Best Management Practices for Pollinators on Western Rangelands can be downloaded at https://xerces.org/best-management-practices-for-pollinators-on-western-rangelands/

Acknowledgments

Funding for this project was provided by the US Forest Service as well as the Ceres Trust, CS Fund, The Dudley Foundation, Endangered Species Chocolate, LLC., J.
