Although these grasslands are often used for cattle ranching, they also support a diverse community of insects, birds, and other wild animals. A significant proportion of rangelands are publicly owned, so how they are managed, especially when it comes to grasshopper control, is a topic of great concern. Extensive spraying campaigns impact declining populations of monarch butterflies, bumble bees, and many other insects. Agencies are making plans for spraying this summer.
