[HECnet] Tru64 kits

Sampsa noted a marked difference in speed. The straight ftp session ran at
100 kb/s while the HECnet/DECnet connection was five times slower.
My internet connection is based on adsl+. My download speed is about 12 Mb/s
but the uplink (as seen from where I sit) is only 750 kb/s (kb/s is kilobit
per second). So 100 kb/s is pretty slow even for this connection.

You do not need high performance hardware to run the bridge. I've done it
with
a Pentium-166 running NetBSD.   The performance issues come from the WAN
bandwidth, or lack thereof... :-)

All HECnet traffic passes thru the system that runs the bridge program.
That particular system does have a 100 Mb/s ethernet card but
unfortunately
runs on a 450 MHz Pentium II machine with 256 MB memory... Not exactly hi
performance hardware :(

COPY copies only in record mode. To speed up things you should use a tool
like DEC's FTSV which does block mode copies (among other things).
