That would explain it. 

Still, there should be more than an .A save set.

It's SIMH. Ooops. Didn't realise I wasn't clear that it was virtual. 

OK.   Somewhere there was mention of VAX-11/780...   I know the real H/W.   I
have never bothered with SimH.

Ah. I do think the problem lies with not having a bootblack on dual.
