No, sorry for confusing the story.  The 600 user machine (with 1000 connected terminals) was the University of Illinois PLATO system, running on a pair of CDC 6500 mainframes.

Later versions got much bigger (on larger and faster CDC mainframes), but 600 users on a pair of two-core machines each running at around two MIPS or so was a pretty significant achievement.
