Pouring Tea
An old woman pouring tea
is a tree leaning over the crag of a cliff.
Precarious is the handle of the pot
in the crag of her hand.
And yet she watches it
as she has watched a thousand times
as the jewel of the tea
cascades down into the decanting
pot to reside. All this by now
she knows, as she knows it has happened
a thousand times before, as all things
have happened a thousand times before,
always new. Her old eyes gather their
arroyos, and if singing comes from the next room
she does not need to know
what the words are. God, she says.
God, she says again. That is the music
in this room always. The sea dancing below,
always there also. No sky. Only her eyes
gauging the pour. That is the present
the old woman needs, and she has it.
God is the present.
