Summer river - Andrea English

Summer river

 
Even in August the Yuba is cold
and fast, a mountain river

rushing to merge,
meet the flow, keep its summer appointment
 
The wide Sacramento doesn’t wait
but makes room for water granted
by the mother mountains, Sierra melt
 
Small among granite boulders and canyon heights
you and I take careful steps,
then push our tubes into the current,
swing out from shore
and like insects on leaves, swirl away
under the sky 
 
Cold water and sky, our world until
the bend and beach we hope for
actually appear
