For Adam
 
 
 
Life is a magic trick --
            Appearing suddenly
                          out of a black top hat.
 
Newborns stare up, wide-eyed,
            at the colored patterns on the
                          magician's tie.
 
Each life is stretched, slowly, into adulthood,
            like knotted scarves pulled out of a pocket
                          too small to contain them.
 
Love pours out of an empty jar like water -- 
            it is emptied, then made full, emptied
                          once again, then overflows.
 
And POOF!  A sudden finale,
            as the magician himself disappears
                          up the shirtsleeve of God.
