They each beat
a poisonous drum
that resonates
with the despair
fear
and anger
of those who 
follow them.

After the First War

despairing
frightened
angry
Germans
were guided 
by heart-and-gut 
to follow
a demagogue
(there have always 
been demagogues)
who found 
Others to blame,
and dark wrongs
to make right.

Trump’s soldiers cry,
“leave me like this ?

“How does America
ignore me ?

“my children ?

“my family ?

“my work ?

“These Others”
they scream,

“These Muslims,
the faggots
and queers
and sickos !

“These Global Warming
freaks !

“And the fucking 1% !

“Enough already !”

It isn’t Trump.
They have it easy.
