Mushrooms

Rising surreptitiously in the night
these low lives cower in shade
gossiping and whispering musty secrets.

They conspire with rotting wood;
some shake mute bells in cow dung.
some come with death in damp pouches.

You know them all
these bloodless friends of night
who make no sound under the knife.
