The Way Back

Why is it I can only trust people
Who have had their heart broken 
100 times who have been
tortured in foreign jails who have
repeated their time in rehab over
and over their
families going broke
whose life companions have
died in their arms or 
whose newborn arrived still or with 
unexpected chromosomes or
those living in countries ruled by hateful
tyrants and with forced circumstance
could not leave? 
Perhaps it is because they have not stopped singing
Perhaps because they have come back
They have come back singing
It is they who left that blood
red twine along the
     labyrinth 
         for me
              to find 
                my way
                    back.
