When the Dominguez Escalante Expedition
couldn’t find a way 
to cross the river,
they left a vast expanse 
of redrock 

empty

at the center
of their map.

Our lives
are like that,
we know so much,
words can describe so much,

and yet,
at our infinite center,
there is
an emptiness
a space
where all
that truly matters
lives.
