The Eagle Creek Fire

The air is still,
            the sky white with smoke
            from the Eagle Creek fire,
            ash drops in tiny flakes,
            the giant white oak
            stands motionless and black,
            silhouetted against the sky,
            like a giant tombstone,
            each dark leaf an inscription,
a memory of one of its
            charred cousins,
            devoured by
            the fire.
