Tashlich in Prospect Park
For my older brother
Rabbi Joseph Gelberman
I drove home from work
through the wooded road and
stopped by the southwest part
of the lake. A few Hasidic
families were throwing bread,
doing their service. Sitting
by a tree, children and dogs
and other people moved by.
The sky was losing its daylight,
and was filled with clouds
in patterned colors
from the setting sun. Trees
across the shore hung
in solemn grace, resting
in the calm cool of almost autumn.
And then the sounds
of their flapping wings
announced a flock of geese
in their splendid dignity; they lit
among the ducks on the still clear water.
