Of Spouses and Fires
Half lose their husbands or their wives,
Far fewer lose homes to wildfires.
The first though worse no one survives.
Obstinate the second transpires.
No pain tops death of spouse or child,
Gloom bone cancer real or phantom
>From home your hearth you’ve been exiled
Hymn of passing your sole anthem
What happens with the house rebuilt
Or another one discovered
Might fickle need produce new guilt
Front door unrecovered?
When might longing for what has passed
Transform to smoke none understands
It’s futile wisdom we’ve amassed
While gods do laugh at human plans.
