Twenty Hundred and Nineteen

Ah, Yeats, whom we had put away
with the old poems,
your lines carefully marked from
our study long ago
with the indomitable Ms. Elizabeth Drew
at the summer college
on the green Vermont hilltop,

so many lines part of our native tongue.
we scarcely remember it was you
who first told us “the center cannot hold.”
But now, “Nineteen Hundred Nineteen”
is put down before us
and we recognize once again
your prescient genius.

A century ago. To the year.
And now we read with new/old eyes
