In the Boboli
The summer has not yet arrived
and is already departing, time claims --
time that has seen everything, that turns
all history on its ruthless lathe. Time
has not bent down to the blades of grass
or touched its wrist to the fountain water.
Watch a pigeon dancing, turning around
and around. Leaves in late spring
are still until they lift in the wind.
Time might know the waste of autumn
as just one point in an inescapable now
when birth and destruction cannot be pried apart,
but a sparrow comes to a piece of apple
and for this small bird, each taste of it is abundance.
