A Poetic Candlelight Vigil
September 9
5pm PT/8pm ET
September 9 marks the 8 month anniversary since the first reported death from COVID-19 back in January. Since then, we have lost innumerable lives to not only this global pandemic but to systemic race-based violence, natural disasters, and more.
One way to make sense of all of this is through the power of self expression and words.
Next Wednesday, we turn to the magic of poetry. Join us at 5pm PT/8pm ET for a Poetic Candlelight Vigil to honor those we have lost and to call in a more loving, considerate, and action-oriented way of showing up for one another and our world.
We will be led by acclaimed spoken word poet and social activist, Darius Simpson <https://go.pardot.com/e/810533/2020-09-02/41pwk/52493388?h=OGG9JdrlQtW-lWv6x7XUOV3tkix-_MiCEfZ_MUXiZI4>, who made history as the first spoken word artist to open the annual Skoll World Forum <https://go.pardot.com/e/810533/watch-v-rwrX-66YrOs/41pwm/52493388?h=OGG9JdrlQtW-lWv6x7XUOV3tkix-_MiCEfZ_MUXiZI4> for Social Entrepreneurship in Oxford, UK. He will be joined by the world-renowned Jane Hirshfield <https://go.pardot.com/e/810533/poets-jane-hirshfield/41pwp/52493388?h=OGG9JdrlQtW-lWv6x7XUOV3tkix-_MiCEfZ_MUXiZI4>, a visiting poet at Stanford University and UC-Berkeley who works at the intersection of poetry, the sciences, and the crisis of the biosphere.
Multi-instrumentalist Amber Sue Field <https://go.pardot.com/e/810533/2020-09-02/41pwr/52493388?h=OGG9JdrlQtW-lWv6x7XUOV3tkix-_MiCEfZ_MUXiZI4> will share their melodic tunes, Katy Butler <https://go.pardot.com/e/810533/2020-09-02/41pwt/52493388?h=OGG9JdrlQtW-lWv6x7XUOV3tkix-_MiCEfZ_MUXiZI4>, health-care author of the acclaimed book Knocking on Heaven's Door: The Path to a Better Way of Death, will inspire us through words and ceremony, and Reimagine’s executive director Brad Wolfe will host.

To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only7 the worst, it destroys our capacity7 to do something. If we remember those times and places – and there are so many – where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.
