Yom Kippur, 5781 
(Day of Atonement, 2020)
 
The fires raged
and the smoke encircled 
the globe.
 
Eveywhere
people breathed
bitter remnants
of ancient trees,
fleeing, frightened animals,
burning toxins,
particles of human flesh.
 
Breath deeply now
this bitter communion
of atonement.
