My Dad

He was always there
in the garden pruning the tomatoes
		or watering the melons
in the basement feeding the furnace
		or building something useful
	in the kitchen frying chicken
or hearing us read at the table
in the yard mowing the Bermuda grass
or playing catch with the kids
on the back porch smoking a Lucky
		or watching the fireflies

I never had to look for him
I’d listen for singing, laughing or snoring

Last night in a dream he was here again
You know what to do, sing your songs
	Laugh every chance you get
Polish your shoes and your friendships
Take my hand and watch your step

He looked pretty good. He’s been gone 40 years.
