Parched
As the first few drops
fell on my face
I cried
Why did it take so long
Last winter
those who could remember drought
did, and began to murmur amongst themselves
Those who wouldn’t
though they could have
didn’t, and didn’t sound the alarm
So we sailed through spring
beginning to worry
though little was done
When we blistered through July, August, September
and a voluntary reduction in use
we shrugged our shoulders
That’s just the way it was
Did we need also to turn off the sprinklers
allow the yards to brown
tell the golf courses to astroturf their greens
the vintners to fallow their fields
Is this dry time a kind of payback
What did we not do
