How We Lost The Earth

Poems are islands of awe in a closing world
Is that a sign on the side of a Red Wood Tree
Thanks-- for your business but after thousands of years
Of providing food shelter water light medicine
Beauty playgrounds we are retiring.
A kind of obsolescence set in. If you don’t use it
Care for it love it repair it teach it protect it understand it
You lose it.
We did not love the earth enough it seems.
We did not every morning hold our hands palms up to the sun
In gratitude.
No definitely not enough
To keep it.
