Night

For those of us awake
in the dark of night
when the good citizens of
this rotting world
have put out their
garbage in black, blue
and green plastic bins
and the night crows caw
as they gather for the spilled
remains of yesterday’s dinner
waiting for the recycling trucks
to heave their way down the street
and the Chicano rhythms to spill
out from the cabs of the trucks —
who will receive our complaints
that this life is not what we planned
and what happened to the stars hidden
behind the city lamps, and the fog horns
in the quiet distance and the sound
of distant trains out the window
when I was young and sleepy
in my midwestern town
