Falling Light

Sonoma Creek parts from its headwaters,

snakes through folded terrain,

runs down the Mayacamas Mountains.

A lone Cochoyan cast her charm stone,

an obsidian tear, into the stream.

as she prays on slippery shale.

Poised in a balance of black with light,

good with evil, gray cascades

into pools, mossy and shadowed.

Along its way a moment shimmers,

frames itself to image where we now stand,

through iris, aperture, lens and shutter.

To capture the way it was,

trying to hold water falling,

halted above the earth,

not to be swallowed by time.
