I Was Going To Tell You
I was going tell you
how I wake each morning to dark foreboding
until the mournful wails of the wild peacocks on the hill,
(all competing for most lugubrious)
mock my depression, and I have to laugh out-loud.
Then, I get to walk into my bright kitchen,
morning sun pouring in like butterscotch,
smell the rich coffee, scent of dark chocolate.
I was going to tell you
about the morning news on the radio
Apocalypse coming, here now!
But now, outside my window
a tiny lizard is doing serious pushups on the deck
and the comedy fills me
with unexpected joy
I was going to tell you
about my fear for our grandchildren’s future
how each day I feel helpless
Then this afternoon, I find that the broken
tomato seedling I have tended
is growing tiny new leaves.
