like Neruda

grief does not just go away even though 
some do not show evidence of it, which
does not mean it is not present
does not mean one did not love enough
does not mean this sudden sense of
abandonment has anything to do
with the length of loss 
or its immediacy

just beneath the edge of awakening  
one is subject to those moments 
held so tightly that like Neruda we sing
the ancient rites of our soul-essence
and briefly experience our awareness 
of being human
