Elderhood

When a sudden memory
Clasps my throat
Making everything taste like ashes

I go looking for an elder
To sweeten the tea
Of grief’s reverie

They know more than the rest
Of us about memories
And the art of loving again

Bank the embers
Of your hearth fire
For there’s a long night
Of storytelling ahead

There may be no
     better way
to discover how to love
      even more
than
          through loss.
