Chasing Ephemera
Ansel Adams slept
on the roof of his car,
venturing out on foot
into Death Valley until
the desert sun relented,
and drew a perfect line
down the spine of a sand dune
into his Korona camera.
Galen Rowell stepped off
the bus at twelve thousand feet,
and took off chasing a rainbow,
while his colleagues opted
for the warmth of a stove.
Rowell ran until he caught
the rainbow as it streamed down
onto the Dalai Lama’s palace.
Camera braced against a post,
he captured more than he saw.
Mark Zukowski, awakened
by a full moon peering
into a Tomales Bay cabin,
donned his robe and waited
for a sonata—
a composition of moonlight
and the glow from a shack
at the end of a pier.
A photograph
that further proves,
artists perpetuate
the fleeting, unrepeatable
moment.
