Sandra Anfang is an award-winning poet, teacher, artist, and editor. Her poems have appeared in Rattle, The New Verse News, The MacGuffin, Spillway, and numerous other journals. Her books include Looking Glass Heart (Finishing Line Press 2016), Road Worrier: Poems of the Inner and Outer Landscape (FLP 2018), Xylem Highway (Main Street Rag 2019), and Finishing School  (Kelsay Books 2023). She’s the founder and host of Rivertown Poets (since 2013) and teaches poetry to children and adults. Sandra also hosts a Sunday afternoon poetry radio show on Petaluma’s KPCA.FM <http://kpca.fm/>. She spends a lot of time walking the hills of Sonoma County, California, snapping photos and writing poems. Foal
 
At five
I saw a mare give birth,
studied her heaving flank
as she pumped life onto the fallow ground.
Already a midwife, I breathed with her,
watched the flaccid sac give way
the slick bag slide from 
the dark recess of her legs
crimson waters drizzling into soil.
 
The foal, amazed, 
stood up on trembling legs.
 
Thinking back on it
I wonder
was this the birth of poetry,
images seeping from my mind
etched in memory
words caught
in webs of milky moonlight?
