Thoughts Of Light

This world was once ruled by the trilobites,
who never spent their time reflecting on
the subtle grades of moral right or wrong:
yet their achievement was the gift of sight.

In their lost time life pushed from dark to light
in some sunfractured pool close by the sea,
or maybe in some mud that merged the night
with day to dazzle cells that wished to see.

Today we link our insights with a sense
that we embody progress for the world;
yet trilobite advance was so immense,
their legacy imbues our every word.

These ancestors in sentience and sight
might be regarded as inventing light.
